Some VRS providers are telling people that if you leave them and start using another company for your VRS calls you will have to pay for the service. That is false!
- Funding for VRS service is provided by the government by a fund called the Telecommunications Relay Service Fund.
- This fund is paid for by all the long distance telecommunications companies.
- This fund guarantees that all VRS service is FREE.
Don't believe the rumors. All VRS service is free for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. That means you can use Purple's VRS service, or any provider's service, free of charge to you.
Warning concerning the use of VRS or IP-Relay for 911 calls.
TTY calls are still the best means for emergency personnel to quickly identify a person's location.
In an emergency, dial 9-1-1 using a landline telephone or a TTY to ensure immediate attention and identification of your location.
At present, VRS and IP Relay cannot guarantee an immediate answer to your call nor transmit your location information directly to emergency responders.
